Safari specialists Ker and Downey have been operating within Botswana since 1962. Their safaris into the unspoiled tracts of Botswana are planned and operated with the same precision, strict attention to detail and concern for safety that have been their professional signature for over thirty-five years. They have three separate camps, each of which shows the traveller a different area and aspect of Botswana - a land rich in wildlife, landscape and culture.
On a Ker and Downey safari you will be met at the airport and flown by light aircraft to your camp so that you need not waste time on the road. There will be a professional Ker and Downey guide to accompany you who will be dedicated to ensuring that you enjoy your safari in every way. A skilled tracker, his years of experience will be used to inform you and to interpret your wildlife experience.
Pom Pom Camp is their most remote and inaccessible site, at the heart of the Okavango Delta, where the hippo wallow in the pool in front of the camp. Surrounded by miles of reeds, the camp is a bird watchers paradise and mokoros (dug out canoes) are the ideal way to explore the maze of waterways. Machaba is on the border of the Moremi Game Reserve, big game country where there are large herds of elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope. The predators are much in evidence here because of the abundance of prey and night drives open a window onto their more secret world. Shinde Island Camp is on a verdant island in the northern Okavango Delta. Extremely remote, the island even boasts the rare sitatunga antelope which is highly adapted to this watery habitat. Fishermen are usually keen to pit their wits against the tiger fish, which is known as an extremely good sport fish.
You may choose which camps you visit - they are all designed to offer the best in comfort, practicality and nostalgic glamour. Your twin-bedded tent will be carefully positioned for a fine view of the African bush. Inside you will find a private bathroom, complete with hot and cold running water, a shower and a flush loo. The beautifully decorated main tent offers table settings and imaginative meals prepared by their safari chefs, including fresh bread baked daily. A well-stocked bar ensures your favourite cocktails, and plentiful ice, are always available. At the end of each day you will relax and enjoy your sundowner and hors d'oeuvres around the open fire. You will listen to the far off calls of the hyenas, perhaps the rough call of a lion, and gaze at the flaming sunset - you are in the wilderness and it is marvellous.
