More or less halfway between Etosha National Park and Swakopmund, two of Namibia's prime tourist destinations, lies Vingerklip Lodge, set among the panoramic vistas of the Ugab terraces.
The lodge is built with the traditional African building materials of wood, stone and thatch, and can accommodate up to 52 people. At the highest point is Ingrid's Blick, named after the lodge's owner, a lovely sundowner spot where delicious cocktails may be enjoyed in harmony with the gorgeous sunsets. The chalets and main recreational area, which houses reception, a small shop, bar and a dining room, are decorated mostly with Namibian materials. An azure pool reflects the wide, clear skies and affords an outstanding view to the west.
Game which occurs in the area includes gemsbok, kudu, mountain zebra, leopard, baboon and springbok. Birdwatchers have plenty to look out for. Common species are mountain chats, rosy-faced lovebirds, red-eyed bulbuls, parrots, white-backed mousebirds, paradise whydahs and several species of hornbill.
Visitors have a wide range of activities to choose from - should lying by the pool pall! In addition to the renowned Ugab Vingerklip, there are Bushman paintings on a neighbouring farm, which can be viewed with prior arrangement. Etosha is 180km to the north-east, while Khorixas and its related attractions - Twyfelfontein, the Burnt Mountains, Organ Pipes and the Petrified Forest - is about 70km to the west.
