Shamwari is the southernmost, big game, private reserve in Africa and, what is more, it is malaria free! This ultimate African adventure stretches along the Bushman's river, and forms a natural extension to the famous Garden Route and Cape Town.
The 14,000 hectare game reserve is steeped in settler history, but is now concerned with conserving a vanishing way of life, and has been awarded a number of international awards for its efforts in conservation coupled with tourism.
Shamwari is an African dream. A game reserve in which plant, animal and bird life are revealed to you along with a luxurious safari experience. Highly trained rangers and skilled service staff will ensure a memorable adventure. In keeping with its conservation policy, Shamwari has a wildlife research team as well as its own anti-poaching unit, helping to ensure the delicate ecological balance.
Accommodation is in three types. Long Lee Manor is a fine Edwardian house built in 1910. Now restored to its former glory, it offers a maximum of forty-two guests the finest in accommodation, service and cuisine. Bedrooms are in deluxe period style with excellent amenities.
Expertly prepared meals can be enjoyed in the main dining room, under the stars in the courtyard, or in the Boma around a fire.
The Manor offers sweepingly romantic vistas of the valley towards Bushman's River. Shamwari Lodge sleeps a maximum of 12 guests in a true African experience. Rustic thatched roofs and ethnic decor enhance the sheer comfort of your safari holiday.
Surrounded by the valley bushveld vegetation you will enjoy relaxed tranquillity accompanied only by birdsong. Traditional African cooking with European touches can be enjoyed in the dining room, or around the fireside "lapa".
The poolbar and swimming pool provide a relaxing site for discussion of the days excitements and activities. Alternatively, you may stay at Carn Ingly, Bushman's River Lodge or Highfield, three 1860 settlers' lodges, recently renovated and furnished with period pieces and unobtrusive modern conveniences. Situated in the heart of the reserve, it is not uncommon to find rhino or other wildlife right on the doorstep. These lodges can be occupied by a group, families or individual guests and all have swimming pools.
