Once the home of Mary Oppenheimer, daughter of the famous mining magnate and philanthropist, Fairlawns Luxury Hotel welcomes travellers with the spirit of grace and elegance of a bygone era. Reception rooms are classically proportioned and decorated, in keeping with the architectural features, in the style of the late eighteenth century in Europe.
The extensive gardens are beautifully kept. The broad terrace is faced with stone urns overflowing with flowers, water trickles from stone lions' heads into basins above a reflecting pool, cypress trees form sharp verticals that contrast with the lush planting. Fairlawns is truly an oasis of calm, yet is highly convenient for Johannesburg and the main highways to Pretoria and airports.
The guest rooms are in a separate building that would look entirely at home in a Parisian square. There are twelve individually decorated suites, each with a theme that determines style and fabrics. The Louis suite has an Aubusson style carpet, a magnificent gilded bed and silk drapes, the Bismarck is decorated in rich greens and reds with a canopied four-poster bed, whereas the African room has a fabulous mural. Bathrooms are magnificent in size and beautifully appointed.
Meals are taken in the formal private dining room, on the terrace or at the poolside - staff are endlessly adaptable and willing to please. Fairlawns is the realisation of the owners' dreams - to create a boutique hotel combining fine architecture and high style with excellent food and personal service.
